PEOPLE LIE. EVERY SINGLE DAY.

In fact, most of our world was built on the foundation of lies, some with the intent to serve the greater good, and others with the intent to serve one person’s giant ambitions. But the root of every lie is exactly the same. They’re all equally deceitful, treacherous propositions spewed from the mouths of men and woman alike.

Lies have the power to sound right, yet feel wrong. They have the ability to confuse your heart and twist your mind. The problem is, sometimes these lies become easier to believe than the truth. They become a sort of safety net from reality, a way to avoid what lingers in the back of your mind. And some say that over time, if you believe them long enough, they become real.

At least, that’s what my mother had hoped would happen in my case. But just like every lie ever told, all it takes is one small crack in that foundation for the whole thing to come crashing down.

And it did.

Because everything I thought I knew about myself was a lie. A beautiful and heartrending lie. I wasn’t the Defect my parents would regretfully see off to college before turning their backs on me. I wasn’t the weak friend who didn’t have enough backbone to stand up for what’s right, nor was I the loner without a purpose or a chance at real love. And I sure as hell wasn’t the weapon Bael and the members of the Darkyn Coven intended me to be.

But I am the weapon the Primeval Coven needs me be. Or so they keep saying.

In my Coven, there are two kinds of people: The Hunters and the Witches. They used to hate each other, even though they were on the same team, back in the old days when cars didn’t exist and time was tracked on a sundial. They hated each other so much that eventually a war was brought on by one of the original Witches—a Divine named Mourdyn.

The war was known as the Great Battle of the Covens. It was meant to wipe out the existence of every Hunter, and it devastated the population of my people, the Primevals. It annihilated the population of the Darkyns—the Witches who abandoned our Coven to follow the whims of Mourdyn and his persuasive lies.

But even though a lie can be struck down—imprisoned even—it can’t ever be fully erased. The scars it leaves behind on this earth and in our hearts are eternal, and somewhere along the way, someone will pick that lie back up and breathe life into it once more. Give it the wings it needs to rise again. Only, this time, that lie will be stronger, with an even greater purpose.

And that’s the part that scares me the most.

I glance down at my leg. The burn marks left behind from Bael’s wrath still tingle with echoes of the scorching fire he sent after me after I escaped with Weldon, reminding me that I’m nowhere near ready for the fight that’s sure to come.

And that has to change.

That’s part of why I agreed to come here to Ethryeal City—to the heart of our Coven. It’s where Hunters and Witches in an affinity bond enter as Night Watchmen and leave as Elites. Where those who have broken our Coven laws go to face the High Priesthood. Where those who need refuge… those like me… come to hide.

The only thing is, I never agreed to being separated from everyone I know. They call it debriefing, but with every day that passes, I’m beginning to wonder… to question how long it actually takes.

It’s been seven days and fourteen hours since my unfortunate and unplanned encounter with Bael—the Demon King of the Underground. In these last seven days, I’ve made more promises than I can count on two hands. And in those promises, I think I’ve told more lies than I ever have in my life.

Honesty seems to have slipped out of her bedroom from inside my integrity and, in her place, deceit has crept in with the offer of survival. If I just nod along with the many blending faces all interviewing me, then maybe somehow, I’ll make it out of this phase in my life alive. I’ll make it back into Jaxen’s arms and back into the graces of the friends I’ve come to trust.

But what deceit doesn’t offer is solace, because you can’t fool deceit. It knows every trick in the book.

Every day, twice a day, for the past four days, I’ve recounted in specific order how my friends and I nearly lost our lives in hopes that we’d gain an advantage on the Darkyn Coven and intercept them from taking the Dagger of Retribution. The one that has the power to initiate the removal of the Veil that separates the Underground and all its evil from the humans. The very Dagger that only I have the power to touch.

I’ve been singularly interviewed by every member on the Priesthood, and then by every general and Elder within the hierarchy of our Coven.

And I’m so very tired.

For the past four days, since I left the safe house beneath the church owned by the Night Watchmen, when I haven’t been in a laboratory undergoing strenuous testing, I’ve spent the remaining hours kept in a holding cell stripped of all personality. Chained down by claustrophobia. Shackled to the fears given free rein to destroy my hope.

I don’t have a home anymore. I have four white walls, one white jumpsuit, a white bed, white sheets… the color was bleached from my life the moment I crossed into the legendary Ethryeal City. I keep trying to remember the last time I saw Jaxen’s face, but my soul has fed so often on the happiness of that memory, I fear it’s disappearing. And I don’t know when I’m going to see him again.

They took everything away from me just to keep me repressed. Controlled. But what they don’t know is they cannot control what they do not own, and they do not own me. I can’t trust anyone. No one but myself, because all I know is I am more of a threat to them than I thought.

And the High Priesthood doesn’t know what to do with me.

RElease Day

Candace Knoebel’s The Gramm Curse: Nightwatchmen 0.5 has just been released!

RElease Banner

The Gramm 3DSet before Everlasting, the addicting start to the Night Watchmen Series, The Gramm Curse is a novella told from Jaxen Gramm’s perspective.

How far is one willing to go for love?

Before finding a love that shakes the entire foundation of his world, Jaxen Gramm only had his Witch, Jezibelle Beaumont, to worry about. He’s her Hunter, and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe from the curse placed on his bloodline, even if it means keeping her far from his heart.

But when a spell is offered that has the power to remove the curse, temptation clouds the ethical judgment of the Gramm brothers and their Witches.

In this action-packed novella, enter the dark recesses of Jaxen’s mind as he battles with himself over a decision that could not only cost him his life, but the life of fellow Coven members. Reunite with Gavin, Cassie, Mack, and Jezi as they dance around the dangers of a civil war on the brink of beginning.

Excerpt

My father once told me that loving someone is the easiest part of our job as a Primeval. He was wrong. They were, at one time, wise words coming from a wise man, but that was before I found out that loving someone would destroy them.

Before I realized that opening my heart was lethal.

As sure as the sun rises each day, this is my reality…my curse…and there’s no escaping it. I know this because it has destroyed my family, and as much as I’d like to believe I’m wrong, there’s not a single thing I can do to fix it. That was made painfully clear when my dad became another victim of the Gramm curse.

So screw feeling.

The leaves ruffle above the tree I stand under, shielding me in scattered shadows. It’s windy as shit, and I really don’t feel like standing around waiting in the freezing-ass cold for the next hunt. Waiting only leads to thinking, and thinking always leads to the past, and I’m tired of thinking about the shit I can’t change; about time ticking away the brittle minutes of what little life I have left.

Jezi pulls up to the curb and gets out of her small, beat-up car. My chest tightens at the sight of her. Years upon years I’ve spent building four steel walls around me, boxing me into a safe, small room with no outlet; no way for anyone to get in and get hurt. It’s the only way to protect myself, and to protect others from myself.

It would take someone stronger than diamonds to cut through what I’ve constructed, someone stronger than me, and Jezi just doesn’t have that kind of strength.

I push my shoulder harder into the tree I’m leaning against and welcome the sharp pain digging in my back. The pressure helps shift the gears in my head and reinforce the strength of my walls. I need to stay in the present. I’m not here to dwell on my problems. I have a job to do, and as long as there’s a breath in my body, I’ll keep fighting to protect humanity because at the end of the day, protecting others is the only thing I can devote myself to entirely without fear of killing them.

It’s the only thing in my life I can safely love.

EXCERPT

“This way,” Nathaniel says from the side of the stage. We’re like cows being herded into individual

pens to await sacrifice. There are closed-in cubicles constructed backstage, and each of us is placed in

one without a word of guidance or encouragement.

“Wait a second,” I say as I try to scan down the row one last time for Katie, but I’m shoved into my

cubicle and the door shuts, enclosing me in between four confining walls with only the light of a

lamp. I drag my hands down the fabric of the walls until I fall down into my seat. I tug on my braid

again and again and again. Calm down. Breathe. Calm down. I chant this over and over again,

imagining that Katie’s the one who’s coaching me. I shut my eyes and am back in her room. The

scent of her perfume overwhelms the small space, but instead of making me sneeze, it comforts me.

It makes my imagined state more real.

I hear loud clapping coming from off the stage and know someone must’ve just gone. They obviously

weren’t a Defect. No one wants a Defect at their ceremony. A voice shouts, “Let’s go, Todd Jenson.

It’s time to meet your partner.” I wonder if it was Katie on stage. I wonder if he’s her partner. I

wonder this through eighteen more times worth of clapping and cheering and name calling. Anytime

now, they’ll open my door and force me to stand before the crowd, force me to touch the quartz, force

me to face my peers in shame. If they deem me a Defect, I’ll be the first this Culling, and most likely

the only.

I twist my hands into knots and think about my parents. They have to be out there by now. I’m going

to walk out there and they’re going to be in the front row smiling. I open my eyes. Four walls. They’re

closing in on me. They’re suffocating me. I have to get out.

“Faye Middleton?” The door opens and air rushes in. I draw sharply on it as the cheering continues.

Another novice and her new partner walk off stage. It’s the girl with black hair. She’s coyly looking at

him from under her lashes. He looks pissed.

Nathaniel guides me forward, and I want to yank my arm from him. I want to tell him I left my

courage back in that cubicle, but I don’t. I can’t. My lips are glued shut by fear. My knees have turned

into two extremities of doubt, and I know I’m going to fall. I’m going to forget how to speak.

Steel blue eyes find mine from across the stage. Elder Maddock. He bows ever so slightly in my

direction, his eyes seeking past my outer appearance. I wonder if he knows who I am. He has to.

I stop right before him and feel like a bird trapped in a cage. I can’t escape the thousands of eyes

studying me. I can’t escape the hundreds of assumptions building me into something I’m not.

“Faye Middleton,” he says, his voice eager and curious. There’s a friendly lightness in his voice I don’t

expect, a sound that makes me feel safe and comfortable under his gaze. He has thick, golden brown

hair combed neatly over to the side and back, showing off the squared planes of his face. He looks

much younger than he should, but older than my father. “Are you ready to begin?”

I turn to the crowd and scan desperately for my parents. Eyes. There are so many eyes. Too many.

They form together, creating an awful monster that wants to swallow me whole. I can’t find them.

The eyes have hidden them from me. I’m all alone. I try to swallow, but my mouth is so dry. I bite the

inside of my cheek, curbing the need to release tears.

The Witch standing next to him says, “Faye, he asked you a question.”

I take in a tight breath and force myself to look away and back at Maddock. “I’m sorry,” I whisper,

my stomach twisting a little tighter.

He pretends not to notice the panic I’m sure my face is masked in and offers me the kindest, most

patient smile. “Everyone is nervous on the day of the Culling,” he says knowingly. “I was a wreck the

day of mine.”

Polite laughter comes from the audience, and I feel myself relax just enough so that I can breathe

again.

He offers me a small wink…a knowing sort of wink, and says, “Your parents will be proud.” He says

these words carefully, evenly, and I know he’s trying to tell me something. They’re okay? He’s aware

of who I am. “So are you ready to begin?”

What if your destiny lay on the other side of death?

Faye Middleton never believed life would begin with death. She also didn’t believe one could find love after such a tragedy. With one, well aimed bullet to her chest – all of Faye’s well-constructed beliefs are put to the test.

After waking up in an alley covered in her own blood, Faye soon realizes life isn’t always what it seems. Being rescued by a strikingly handsome Hunter named Jaxen, shakes the very morals she had as a mortal, or what she thought would be her morals, if she could only remember who she was and what they were.

Jaxen Gramm never thought true love was an option. Being a Hunter meant he was bound to his Witch…someone completely opposite of Faye. But when he rescues Faye in the alley, she steals his heart with just one look. And after realizing just who she is and her importance to their race’s survival, Jaxen takes her under his wing in hopes to help find her killer.

No side of this war is safe for Faye. Hunted by both good and evil, can Faye learn how to use her newly acquired powers to retrieve the Exanimator before time runs out and Mourdyn, an ancient evil, is released from his cell in the Underground?

Embracing the Flames Blog Tour: Interview with Candace Knoebel

Embracing the Flames CoverI am happy to welcome the award-winning author, Candace Knoebel, today on the blog.

She is busy promoting her new novel: Embracing the Flames the second book in Born in Flames-a young adult fantasy trilogy. Published by 48fourteen in 2012, Born in Flames went on to win Turning the Pages Book of the Year award in February of 2013.

In Book 2, The Stone of Immortality has always been kept under the watch of the Draconta. That is, until the betrayal of a Fate. Now everything is about to change.

Aurora Megalos accepted her destiny without blinking-even if it meant succumbing to her dragon side. Deemed the Progeny, she left the ordinary life she knew and has done everything in her power to learn the ways of her new realm and what it means to be part dragon. But when her mentor, Astral, suddenly disappears, she is forced to take the reins.

With war on the brink, she sets out on an epic journey to not only find her mentor, but to stop her Arch Enemy, Zordon, from obtaining the Stone of Immortality. But what she discovers about him along the way is far worse than she could’ve ever imagined. She will be tested and pushed to the limit. Lives will be lost, love will be questioned, and a battle will begin.

So lets get on with the questions!
When did you know you wanted to be an author?

– About the same time I first typed the words the end back in 2009.  Before then, I didn’t even know I could write a full novel.  Now it is all I want to do.

How was writing your second novel different than writing your first?

– I knew the character and where the story needed to go versus sitting down with a vague idea and a glimmer of a character. I had more confidence and knowledge in what I was doing which made the words and the concept flow easier for me.

What has been the biggest thing you have learned in this process of writing a novel? Most challenging thing about being an author?

– The biggest thing is to not compare yourself to anyone else or worry about what others think. Take from what you hear and grow from it, and always try to top yourself. You can only keep improving. The most challenging part has been following that advice.

If you could choose anyone to be a mentor, which author would you consider?

– J.K. Rowling. She is brilliant.

What is your favorite book?

– Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Who is your favorite character?

– Harry Potter of course lol.

Who designed your covers?

– The very talented Ravven. She is awesome to work with. You can find her here: http://www.ravven.com/

Are the names of the characters in your novels important?

– Yes. I believe every name should have a meaning whether it pertains to the story or to the personality of the character. It’s like naming a child. Their name has to meansomething or else it’s just another name.

What makes you laugh?

– My husband. He is a human encyclopedia filled with sarcasm and jokes.

You seem like you are industrious, do you ever go on vacation? Where would your dream vacation be?

– I am very hard-working, but I find plenty of time for my family and for myself. We are actually getting ready to go on a vacation in August to either Washington D.C. or to the Keys. We haven’t decided yet lol. My dream vacation would be backpacking through Europe though. Hopefully one day I will.

Most of the readers of my blog are other writers, any advice to share?

– Practice makes perfect and it will only happen if you make it happen. Keep writing! 😉

Reading Rampage #3: The Review of Born In Flames

Born in Flames is the debut novel of Candace Knoebel. It is the first part of a trilogy which I am looking forward to finishing since I love dragons and loved the concept of the book, however, I always feel a bit disappointed in first books, because I want to know what else happens in the story, but my impatience is hardly Knoebel’s fault… I WANT MORE!

So that being said, I enjoyed this book, Knoebel’s narration style and The Born in Flame’s storyline feels fresh.

The protagonist Aurora is strong, stubborn and a bit hot headed but her counterpart Fenn is level headed and only wants to keep her safe. Due to this, I liked him better, but Aurora holds the book up due to her strength. They were both real enough that I was able to connect to them easily.

Great story and highly recommend it!

Special Guest: Candace Knoebel

This week I am happy to welcome Candace Knoebel author of the new YA urban fantasy novel Born in Flames published by 48Fourteen!

Red mirrored scales race up my arms as the haze of pain blurs my vision. My bones crack, breaking to realign. I scream. It is then that the realization of my unavoidable fate sinks in; I am of a dying race. I am dragon.

Aurora Megalos, orphaned and teetering on the edge of adulthood, thought finding her past would curb the sting of being an outcast. Having no memories of the time before she awoke on her foster mother’s doorstep, she yearns for the emptiness inside her to be filled. With her fellow orphaned best friend, Fenn, by her side, she has nothing to lose and everything to gain. But something powerful stirred within her that she couldn’t explain. Something wanted out.

In the dark of night, a crazed Seer, dubbed Mr.Creepy, erases everything she’s ever known with an impending prophecy. She now faces two paths. Return to her true home to protect a dying race against a growing evil, or stay hidden in the safety of our realm with a shot at a true love. With a vengeful Arch Enemy stopping at nothing to see her dead, she’s running out of time; a decision must be made. What would you choose?

Thanks for coming today, Candace and let’s move on with the questions!
Where do you get your inspiration?
I haven’t had as much time to read lately, so when a good book is no where to be found, I turn to music. Music, just like in the movies, plays on my emotions while writing. It affects the scenes I write and helps me tap into the emotions of the characters. It’s the only thing that helps me concentrate actually.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Quite a few things actually. I play with my kids and watch movies with my husband. I find myself at my bestie’s house at least twice a week. I try to fit in time to read and jog. I guess you could say just the normal stuff. But the number one, most favorite activity of mine, is visiting Universal so I can have a Butterbeer!!! I go at least once a month.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your first book?
Patience…:) I’ve always been one to rush everything. If it didn’t happen fast, then I usually wasn’t doing it. But you can’t write a good story and go through the publication process like that. It takes time to plot and imagine the storyline. It also takes time to query. Throughout this whole process (since 2009), I have gained so much patience and understanding. I don’t think the old me would tolerate the new me.
Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?
Take your time and don’t give up hope. There will be days when you aren’t into it, days when you think it will never work, and days where you can’t stop typing! If you really have a passion for writing, and you really want to see your story in the hands of readers, then you have to be willing to work hard. Late nights, tears, mad fits of laughter, tattered dreams, glimpses of hope, all of these things will come to pass. Just hang in there and continue believing that it WILL happen…and it will.
What kind of books do you like to read?
Mostly YA, Dystopian, Urban Fantasy, Fantasy, Paranormal Romance…anything good really.
What are you reading now?
Well, because I am always multi-tasking, I am reading The Fallen Star, Eternal Eden, The Wizard of Time, Gregor the Overlander, and Out of Nowhere. Lol. But if you watch my Goodreads, you will notice that my progress is slow.
Who is your favorite character in Born in Flames?
Sheesh…tough question…umm…I have to go with the main character Aurora. I relate the most to her and admire her strength. She doesn’t give herself enough credit sometimes, especially considering her circumstance and inevitable fate that constantly threatens her well-being. She’s just fun and easy to write.
Did you always want to be a writer and if not, what else did you want to do?
Oddly enough, I didn’t realize I could actually do it until 2009. I know most authors say they always wanted this, but that wasn’t my case. I have always been good at it. Excelled in English in school and won a lot of story contests, but at that time, I was deep into my dancing career. I danced for 15 years and had planned on doing that for my future. But obviously it didn’t pan out. Typical high school love story I suppose. Fell in love, married, had a baby. Then one day, an idea struck me and I blindly sat down and started typing, just for fun. When it kept coming and the story wouldn’t leave my head, that’s when I realized it was something I wanted…more than anything!
Tell us about your next project.
I’m still on the Trilogy. I’ve finished the first draft of Embracing the Flames, the second novel to the trilogy. I’m hoping to be finished with my edits within the next month or so and then it will go to my publisher for editing. Then I have to start the third novel! I have tons of ideas, and one in particular that I will be jumping on as soon as I see this project through…but I force myself to stay focused. Juggling multiple projects just doesn’t work for me.
